Sherryl Dawn Weems

Dr. Sherryl D. Weems currently serves as Associate Vice-Provost for Continuing and Professional Studies and Executive Director of the Educational Opportunity Center at the University at Buffalo. In this dual administrative capacity, she has the oversight responsibility for creating access and opportunity for adult students (traditional and non-traditional) who seek formal education experiences, job training and workforce preparation on a variety of levels and in multiple capacities. Combined, these programs offer a unique response to degree and professional certificate seeking adults, adults in need of basic academic literacy, English as a Second Language, pre-college preparation, job preparation and specific job skill training as well as to employers who have a commitment to improving workforce access, affording opportunities for training, and sustaining pipeline development.

Dr. Weems is currently serving a second term as a Member of the New York State Workforce Investment Board (WIB). As a board member, she shares responsibility for statewide policy development, resource distribution and resource monitoring for all initiatives related to workforce development. In addition, she served for five years on the National Workforce Development Oversight Council, representing New York State. This Council was charged with the research and development of the National Work Readiness Credential.

In her professional capacity, Dr. Weems is noted for addressing professional conference delegations on issues that relate to the critical importance of continuing and professional studies; and educational, community and workforce partnerships that promote access to higher education, employment and/or economic and workforce development.

Dr. Weems also serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Buffalo where she concentrates her teaching emphasis is on introducing undergraduate/graduate students to the profession of teaching through various course sequences.

Dr. Weems works with a number of campus committees, community organizations, local employers, and educational organizations, to promote and create opportunities for literacy, continuing and professional education and economic and workforce development throughout the region. She has held board positions on a number of community service agencies and works closely in an advisory capacity to a number of educational and workforce development entities.

She is one of the founding members of Buffalo Prep, a member of Leadership Buffalo and currently serves on the Alumni Board of the State University of New York College at Fredonia. In addition, she is appointed as a Board Director for the King Center Charter School in Buffalo New York, and she was most recently asked to serve on the Mayor’s “Pathways Out of Poverty” Planning Board for the City of Buffalo.

Dr. Weems is a member of several professional organizations: The University Continuing Education Association (UCEA); The Continuing Education Association of New York (CEANY); and, The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (A.P.L.U.).

Dr. Weems received her Bachelor’s of Arts in Education/Spanish Concentration from the State University College at Fredonia; Masters in Science in Education/Reading Specialist, and Doctorate in Education/Administration and Curriculum Planning the both from the University at Buffalo; and a Masters of Arts in Theology from Northeastern Seminary, Rochester, New York. She also completed the Harvard Graduate School of Education Institute for Higher Education Certification Program in Management Development.
